Meet C2C Founder Akua Tay

Allow me to introduce myself!

My name is Akua and it’s pronounced ah-quee-ah. Akua is the name given to women who are born on Wednesdays in Ghana. My parents came to the United States from Ghana in October 1981 and I was born less than 3 months later. In almost 40 years of life, I’ve never stepped one foot onto African soil. I don’t speak Twi even though it was my first language. Apart from my mother and sister, the majority of blood relatives live Ghana including my older brother and sister. I love Egusi but feel like pepper soup and jollof rice are way too spicy for me to even enjoy. I am the literal definition of African American but yet I’ve never felt confident in being African or American.

I have a passion for beauty and fashion but music is one of my first loves. When I didn’t have the words to express how I felt, I’d always seem to find the perfect lyric that described my mood. I started Beats In The Streets as a way to find myself through my love of music, beauty, fashion and culture. I want to share that journey with as many people as possible. I invite you to join me as I learn more about all the things that make me who I am. The music I hear, the clothes I wear, the food I eat, the people I meet and the places I go. Let’s get it!
