The Grooves In The Garden experience is designed to connect Americans with their West African friends and neighbors in a shared cultivation experience. This exciting event series celebrates our diverse community in Washington, DC while also paying homage to our roots while connecting District residents. Located in DC's most beautiful urban farm, The Well at Oxon Run Park, the festival transforms the green space into a vibrant hub of activity and cultural exchange.
Connected to Culture hosted a sensational Eat and Afrobeats edition of Grooves In The Garden, a captivating celebration that artfully showcased the pulsating rhythms of Afrobeats. Tunes for the afternoon were skillfully curated by local DJ NativeSUN, setting the stage for a vibrant and immersive musical experience. The event was elevated with a live performance from Afrobeats star Moliy, adding an electrifying and authentic touch to the rhythmic celebration.
The Beat Ya Feet To Afrobeats edition of Grooves In The Garden seamlessly blended the rhythmic allure of Afrobeats with DC's Go-Go culture and the electrifying Beat Ya Feet dance style. The event featured the iconic UCB band and they set the stage with authentic Go-Go vibes. Afrobeats-inspired tunes were skillfully curated by local DJ Xsa, adding her signature touch to the diverse musical landscape. To further promote physical wellness, the event featured activities like double-dutch, adding an element of fun and inclusivity to the vibrant celebration.
Grooves For Growth
A dynamic and multifaceted program designed to empower community youth by blending dance, music, and cultural exploration. Through hands-on training and mentorship, youth participants have the opportunity to engage in both dance and DJing, learning essential life skills while fostering creativity, leadership, and cultural appreciation. The culmination of Grooves for Growth is the annual, highly anticipated Grooves in the Garden celebration.
Global DJ Skills and Music Therapy Experience
Through hands-on training, students ages 15 - 18 will learn the technical aspects of DJing and music production. They will explore various global music genres, with a particular emphasis on African and African Diaspora musical traditions. In addition to mastering DJ equipment, students will gain exposure to the cultural contexts behind different music styles, fostering a deeper connection with the global music community.
Dance and Cultural Empowerment Experience
Participants will receive hands-on instruction in various dance styles, including African dance, Afrobeat, hip-hop, and contemporary movement. Students will learn the foundational techniques, choreography, and performance preparation skills needed to express themselves through dance.
