The Challenges of Period Poverty in Ghana
Period poverty in Ghana is a major issue that has recently been highlighted due to the disproportionate economic impacts of COVID-19. Menstrual cups have been identified as an affordable and sustainable solution to address this challenge. This is particularly important in Ghana, where there is a lack of affordable menstrual products, causing many women and girls to resort to using rags, sponges and other unhygienic materials. Menstrual cups, on the other hand, are reusable and can last up to 10 years. This not only helps reduce the economic burden of period poverty but also helps protect the environment. It is therefore essential that access to menstrual cups be improved so that Ghanaian women and girls can access safe and reliable menstrual products.
Through our “Connect to Queendom” program, we provide resources, mentorship and connection to their peers to improve the quality of lives of women on the continent and throughout the African Diaspora. To date, our "Connected to Queendom" program has provided over 200 reusable menstrual cups, sanitary pads and underwear to clinics in Tema, Ghana. Our curated events, special workshops and one-on-one sessions designed to engage, inspire and support the personal and leadership development of young African women. The goal is to develop women across the continent as agents of change through our cultural exchange program. In order to foster lifelong connections with the continent and the Diaspora, women in Africa are linked with their peers in the Diaspora for virtual and in-person experiences where they share important life lessons and build life-long bonds.
Aside from its economic implications, period poverty has significant health implications for women and girls in Ghana; with many unable to access necessary hygiene items such as sanitary pads, there is an increased risk of infection and other medical complications All in all, period poverty is a major health concern for the women and girls of Ghana.
